Sailing: Living Christian life with wind at your back, God is real to your heart, you often feel His love, you see prayers answered, you see those around you influenced by the Spirit through you

Rowing: Prayer and Bible reading are more from “duty” than “delight,” God seems distant, God’s presence seems rare, prayers are not answered, continue to serve, pray and read the Bible despite spiritual dryness

Drifting: Experience all of “rowing” and instead of continuing to row you let yourself drift, don’t pray or read the bible, give in to self centeredness and feel sorry for yourself, drift into self indulgent behaviors to comfort yourself (eating, sleeping, sexual practices, etc.)

Sinking: Lose any forward motion in Christian life (not praying or reading the bible), numbness of heart can become hardness because you give into thoughts of self pity and resentment, if some major difficulty or trouble were to come in your life, it would be possible to abandon your faith and identity as a Christian altogether
